iPad

ipad-front.png
I don't need one of these excuses for sophomoric humor.

But it looks cool.

No need to justify what is basically a larger iPod Touch.

But it looks really cool.

So what I'm saying is I have no use for this thing.

Just another cumbersome object to keep track of. To lose, get stolen, or stepped upon.

Isn't it cool though?

Everything Apple makes has a certain polished quality about it.

Maybe that is why all their damn stuff costs a million dollars!

But this coy smile from a street corner will put you out $500 for starters, plus accoutrements.

Cool.

This is not the age of Sinbad, or even land line phones, unless you are me.

Also the "thing" is not exactly a computer.

Way cool.

We should all definitely wait for the ruckus to settle. See what products emerge later.

Unemployment is over 10%. Such devices at this point can wreck eating patterns.

I am definitely not getting one.

Remember this stupid thing?

I guess you can cut salami with it or fan your hair.

Glossy Paperbacks are my Downfall

macbookpro_portable.jpg
<-- okay I really did not need this book, but I bought it anyway.

Why?

Because it's a pretty, glossy, heavy in hand, substantial art form - despite the lame dude on the cover.

Okay, he's not lame, but I would prefer some tech-savvy woman like Sandra Bullock instead of this guy who looks like his day job is serving lattes at Starbucks.

Scroll down.

Notice anything in particular about this crowd? ------>>>>>>>>>>

They are all YOUNG.

Very young.

As if they know everything.

Well, they are geniuses, of course.

I was a young genius once. Remember "Pong" and "Centipedes?"

And what's with all the black attire? Is that cool now?

Note girls outnumber guys in genius-ville. It always happens. Country lanes. City streets. Girls always have a magic mouse touch.

The point of this whole diatribe is to declare that I'm a sucker for polished paperbacks. They feel good to buy. They feel excellent and heavy and literary.

Away for a Weekend - House Gremlins

mac-pro-fix.jpg

Okay, so like I took a short road trip over the weekend and came back to a house that seemingly had been visited by Gremlins.

All the clocks were blinking, with nary a thunderstorm to have caused a power outage. Strange. This is not South America, yet.

So I fired up the Mac. Hellooo beautiful Cinematic Display? You look plugged in to me. Of course, one of the plugs in the white transformer dealy-whoppy was loose. So try again and plug in the iPod.

What is that loud noise? Fan on overdrive. What is that bright red light emanating from the bowels of the Mac? Open up the door and peer in. Two piercingly red diodes on a chip board in the very back glaring like tiger eyes. That board connects the USB peripherals, including the iPod on a chain USB extension cable. Sigh.

RESTART and PRAY.

Humming along quietly now. My guess is that the sudden electrical loss screwed up the hardware, and my plugging in a new device only exacerbated a "bad" condition.

The point of this diatribe is to echo a puzzling, detached understanding of the universe about how it is that leaving a house alone for a few quiet days can result in subsequent owner panic attacks, not to mention clock resets.

Unfortunately, my clocks all say it is time to get ready for another work week. For those of you who actually get President's Day off (i.e. no point in checking snail mail later) -  enjoy your extended weekend.

Hannah Rocks

ipodjpg.jpg

Her name is Hannah, and I am impressed by her enunciation

One of those perennial twenty-six year-olds.

Like you are never going to lose that bulky device.

I am still loving THIS THING.

On second thought, Hannah does rather resemble an elf.

New Macbooks

Stop talking about how cool your new MacBook is Duffy.

"Mercy"

Mарк, вы обжуливаете на мне?

I am thinking my date from Novsibirsk won't answer the door.

Then comes Alison Krauss.

Who could ever let her walk away?

I'm missing everybody.

Go Dementieva."

elena_dementieva_1.jpg
You know, she is really quite good.

Conversational in six languages.

Hits the ball pretty hard.

Why can't she get over the top?

Why ask why?

Remember the rule in advertising about never acknowledging a competitor?

New Apple MacBooks

webbjpg.jpg

But, like Miss Webb here, on the web, must remain Windows dressing until core accounts clothe themselves to stem the fruits of unseedy tempests.

That means gotta save money to pay for roof and wall fix-ups.

Webb on the web, finely woven.

I hear she and Mac OS Ken
exchange emails about podcasts.

GIMME BACK MY MAC!

19564472.jpg

It feels good in your hands, polished pages, pretty colors.

Thanks mom, for the Barnes & Noble gift card I finally used, along with the Starbucks one. Mmnnn - good coffee.

And the girl behind the counter only had one weird ring in the facial area and spoke non-valley.

I was shocked.

But about this book.

Sure, I have the David Pogue "Mac OS X The Missing Manual."

Classic.

Oh so many sticky notes in pages for hints and tips I can never remember.

But life is not all about books Creechman. You must get out there and LIVE! Find lost progeny, wherever they might simper.

Behind the "Genius Bar."

I always wanted to be a genius.

So here is the story about my MacBook Pro. Or more about the owner's lame attempt to forestall disaster by inviting it.

The Apple Store "Geniuses" ran it through a harsh Gitmo gabmit of stress tests, and it passed.

Too bad it took until 9PM, three phone calls, including one to Mac Central complaining the Baybrook Mall Store Crowd sounded like a high school party rather than professionals.

So whatever. Just gimme back my Mac please.

Now I have to wait until 11AM (on a Sunday?) Outrageous, to go over there and pick it up with no video chip replacement needed.

You know what will happen.

We both know it.

I will get it back, happily rejoined like long lost family swept once again into loving embrace. I will coo over it, brush lovingly the metal tint with baby cloth, press the "ON" button.... No - I am not going there. Everything will be just FINE!

Flaky Video Cards and Nvidia Chip Sets

MacBookPro.jpg

if you own a MacBook Pro purchased within the past year. Potentially faulty video processor.

I have not had any trouble. But mine matched the recall candidates. Apple help suggested I take it in under warranty for diagnostics, so that's on the Saturday list today.

Ironic, because just two days ago, one of my other trusty PC's, a laptop running

emersoncam_10_10_08_854AM_standup.jpg

"Emerson Cam," video card failed beyond tech supports ability to help. Out of warranty. Tried some things. Then it wouldn't even boot up. Custom machine, so can't replace part. 20 pound goliath. They offered to try to look at it, but the cost and no promises... Gonzo.

My Dell laptop died last year, also from a dead video card. It would run okay (from sound), but no display. I might be able to replace that card on a dull weekend, but it remains another project in the closet.

So I am running out of computers in an economy going south.

I should get a good parking spot at the office today. Need to gain time to take said dog up into Houston Wednesday for tests monitoring various conditions. At least an hour drive each way, if no accidents on the freeway.

On the home front, temporary roof repairs will undergo another rain test early next week. Permanent repairs, both roof and interior, are going to take a long time. I'm on six contractor's lists, but with the widespread damage from hurricane Ike, the operative word is "wait."

MobileMe Update

cloudjpg.jpg
This is now working for me, for the most part. I'm still not sure exactly how the sync works (i.e. which internal map on the macs or in the cloud is the "true" one?).

Also, I'm not using idisk to back up data. So far, only using the gallery space for movie clips.

In other words, I've been playing more than working with this capability.
